In 2022, Survivor Rally decided to dedicate all proceeds from its fundraising activities to Cancer.
In November of 2020, Ruth was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of stomach cancer at an age younger than most other patients who have had the same type of cancer. Since her diagnosis, she has had 3 major surgeries, numerous scans, scopes, minor procedures, doctor visits and more. She has had to learn how and what she can and can't eat due to having her stomach removed. Her health has declined tremendously due to lack of nutrition and the side effects of cancer. Through her journey, she is a survivor and a fighter. But she watched others going through cancer treatment who struggled in one way or another, whether it is emotionally, medically and/or financially.
In 2021, Phil went in for an emergency visit to the hospital for what he thought was a heart attack. The good news was that his heart was okay and it wasn't a heart attack. But they did discover a tumor on his kidney in the x-rays and scans that were performed. After biopsy, it was declared that the tumor was kidney cancer. Phil had surgery to remove part of his kidney in December 2021. Finally, in June of 2022 he was told he was in remission and would not need to have check ups for a year. He won his battle against Cancer!
After discussion, Ruth and Phil decided that for 2022 Survivor Rally they should pick a cancer charity due to what both of them had gone through. Plus, there are several Survivor Rally participants who have fought or are still fighting cancer too. So, the directors of Survivor Rally searched for a local 501(c)(3) charity that provided aid to individuals who are undergoing Cancer treatment. They found several charities that provided funding for cancer research or that dealt with only a specific type of cancer. But not a local charity that encompassed all types of cancer and aid to individuals. Thus, SR Cancer Fund was created!
1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. In 2023, roughly 1.9 million people will be diagnosed in the US.
Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. But many cancers can be cured if detected early and treated effectively.
